When Meg Whitman a candidate for the Governor of California, knowingly employed an undocumented worker in 2009 it was clear that Wing felt she was being hypocritical and fake. Most of his article is about the maid and how she was evidently mistreated. “She was exploited, disrespected, humiliated, and emotionally and financially abused." According to the maid Whitman never asked for legal papers and when she was let go Whitman told her, “I don’t know you, and your don’t know me.” Wing interprets his opinion by quoting one of her campaign speeches in order to undermine Whitman’s arguments. "We need to build an 'Economic Fence' with a strong e-verification system that holds employers accountable for following the law, according to her own campaign Website. We are never going to solve the problem of illegal immigration as long as there is strong demand for undocumented labor." By quoting Whitman, Wing is proving to his readers that Whitman is not an appropriate candidate for Governor because she supports business inspections and believes that business owners should accept the consequences for their illegal actions.
Not once in his article does Wing mention anything about any charges Whitman will possibly be facing. The one consequence he made obvious is that Whitman will possibly lose a great number of votes and support based on her hypocritical actions. This scandal is in some ways similar to the Daniel Millis trial and his efforts to prevent deaths in the Arizona/Mexico desert. Millis is a missionary and Whitman is a candidate for Governor. This goes to show Americans that it all kinds of people get themselves involved with immigration. Immigrants are often said to be “cheap labor”, which makes it very enticing to illegally do so if they are undocumented. This article is also a warning to anyone who is looking to hire workers. The employer should check for legal documentation in order to prevent getting in trouble with the Government like Whitman did.
